The Great Lakes Prep Hockey League (GLPHL) is expanding its competitive landscape with the launch of a new “Varsity” division for the 2025–26 season. This addition marks a significant step in the league’s growth, offering more structured opportunities for elite high school-aged players to compete at a high level.

The new “Varsity” division in the Great Lakes Prep Hockey League (GLPHL) is carving out a niche that blends elite training with academic structure—something that sets it apart from many traditional youth leagues.

The Great Lakes Prep Hockey League (GLPHL) is now structured into two competitive tiers:

  • PREP Division: This remains the league’s top tier, featuring elite-level programs like Shady Side, St. Francis, Académie Ste-Cécile, Rice Memorial, Blyth and Saint Viator. These teams typically offer rigorous training schedules, high-end facilities, and exposure to NCAA and junior scouts.
  • VARSITY Division: Newly launched for the 2025–26 season, this second tier provides a competitive platform for developing players who may not yet be at the Prep level but still want serious training and game experience. It’s a great stepping stone for athletes aiming to elevate their game within a structured academic-athletic environment.

This two-division format mirrors the structure of other top prep leagues and allows for better alignment of competition levels while expanding opportunities for more student-athletes. Want to explore how teams might move between divisions or how this impacts player development?
